Travel backlog - Odaiba Part 2: Salvation for Terminators

23 May (Saturday) Miraikan/Terminator Exhibition

The T-1

There was a new movie out, and the roadshow has hit the Miraikan at Odaiba, Japan. I'm a fan of the series enough to fork out an extra 600 yen to see what the machines have in store for us.

Above Left: A bust of the T-800 series (played by Arnold/Governor Schwarzeneggar :P) "My CPU is a neural net processor, a learning computer."

Above Right: A bust of female Terminator Cameron (played by actress Summer Glau) from the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series. "Come with me if you want to live!"

Above Left: The T-X, star of Teminator 3: Rise of the Machines, a hybrid of metallic endoskeleton (pictured here) and liquid metal (not shown, I wonder why :P)

Above Right: Appearing in the latest movie, the T-600 series were the ones that were "easy to spot" (according to Reese from the first Terminator movie). No kidding. At over 2.4m tall, even Arnie on steroids couldn't have grown that big :P

In the new Terminator Salvation movie, we get to see all kinds of never-before-seen Terminators, not all of them humanoid in appearance. On display were two particularly nasty pieces of work: a snake-like Terminator with a deadly scorpion like tail that operates underwater, and a sports bike Terminator with gattling guns and the ability to travel in the reverse direction without having to turn around.

Uncanny Valley
Also on display at the Terminator Exhibition was a human-like Japanese robot from Kokoro Co., Ltd. They certainly put a lot of effort into developing her, including giving her a silicon skin which looks rather realistic when photographed, but still fake when seen by the naked eye. While this female robot's movements are much more natural than most other humanoid robots, the uncanny valley still looms large before her. We are a long way from creating truly life-like cybernetic organisms, so no need to worry about Terminators or Cylons just yet.
